PRESERVING CAPE HERITAGE AND CULTURE THROUGH EXPLORING VISUAL ARTS AND EDUCATION

YOUTH CONTESTS

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

In conjunction with our new exhibition titled ‘Reframing Departure’, which will take place from Heritage Month-October, we encourage educators to motivate their high school learners to participate in an exciting competition. The initiative invites learners to capture and share their unique experiences on their daily journeys to school. Whether it’s a fleeting moment that catches their eye, an interesting person they encounter, a breathtaking landscape, or even a small detail that often goes unnoticed, this project aims to highlight the diverse perspectives of youth. By sharing their observations, students will express their creativity and provide a glimpse into their world, showcasing how they perceive their surroundings in a way that is distinctly their own.

We believe that every journey holds stories worth telling, and through this initiative, young learners can showcase their creativity and insight. Learners will contribute to a collective narrative that highlights the beauty and complexity of their everyday lives, ultimately offering a fresh lens through which to view our shared heritage, inviting them to reconsider the impact of historical narratives on present-day identities and movements.

MORE ABOUT REFRAMING DEPARTURE

‘Reframing Departure’ will feature two powerful narratives by artists Shana-Lee Ziervogel and Hafeez Floris, both of whom tackle the complex legacies of colonialism and apartheid. Their works challenge the traditional maps and images that have historically defined and divided spaces, revealing how these inherited geographies continue to influence contemporary society. The Archives will focus on the historical legacy of spatial inequality shaped by apartheid in Cape Town which is largely considered to be South Africa’s most segregated city due its social composition and spatial form, rooted in its colonial and apartheid history. It is a city that holds wealthy leafy suburbs that offer exceptional amenities, beautiful scenery and access to opportunities to move up the social ladder. It also holds and is juxtaposed with inhospitable settlements that are often neglected economically, politically and socially despite its deep history such as District Six, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha.

It’s time to shine a light on art and honour the diverse cultural heritage and history that enriches our city!
