My name is Likhwezi Siyali, and I am a student at Apex Stellenbosch. Today, I want to share with you what Heritage Day means to Xhosa people and why it's such an important celebration.

Heritage Day is a significant day for Xhosa people, as it honours their ancestors who fought against apartheid and colonisation. They celebrate with pride and joy, wearing traditional clothes like intricately designed blankets and beadwork, that tell stories of their history and status. The blankets and beadwork are colourful and meaningful, representing different clans, families, age, status, and marital status.

On this day, Xhosa people eat traditional food like umngqusho (samp and beans), inqunu (stewed meat), and ijeqe (steamed bread). They sing traditional songs like iMbube and uMabatha, which tell stories of their struggles and victories.

For Xhosa people, Heritage Day is about remembering their ancestors and the struggles they faced, like forced removals, land dispossession, and cultural suppression. They honour their ancestors by continuing their traditions and customs.

One important tradition for Xhosa boys is the initiation ceremony, which involves going to the bush. This is a rite of passage where boys learn valuable skills and values from the elders, like bravery, respect, and responsibility. One day, I hope to follow in their footsteps and experience the bush for myself, learning from the elders and deepening my connection to my culture. I'm excited to learn more about my culture and how to lead my community with pride.

Xhosa people have a rich culture of respect for elders and ancestors. On Heritage Day, they come together to celebrate their heritage, sharing stories, dancing, and feasting. It's a day to be proud of who they are and where they come from - the beautiful Eastern Cape, with its rolling hills and rich soil. Heritage Day is a celebration that brings Xhosa people together, reminding them of their resilience, culture, and traditions. Let's continue to celebrate and share our culture with future generations.
